Billy Idol BOK Center Concert reviews
Slightly Hoodwinked, Forever Bedazzled
The crowd was nearly as diverse, and the humor ranged from an off-color Willie Nelson joke to political satire. My evening with Billy Idol felt strangely intimate and as it should have been—entertaining despite the auditorium setting.
I had the opportunity before the show to have a book signed. Mr. Idol appeared interested as I rattled on about my family being fans of his work—both immediate and extended. I walked away with the sense that the author seems to be a good listener and a good human being, aside from being a good writer. (I was also immediately enlightened as to why my daughter disappears when I get in the book signing line.)
Having not attended a similar show in this large a venue, my seat was the best available at the time of my purchase (two days before) and not bad. Once the lights dimmed and Mr. Idol uttered his first words in C.Y. Stephens, I wondered how the performance would play out, but the experience felt like fireside storytelling. I was convinced that there was not a bad seat in the house.
I was surprised that his performance was fresh as a fan of his readings on National Public Radio and a reader of most of his books. Typically, when I see a comedian or humorist live, there comes a point where I say, “Oh, this bit is really funny,” or, “Oh, yes, I remember reading this,” but this moment never came. The excerpts from his latest book, “Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk,” were new to me as were his anecdotes from airports. Equally refreshing was the recording of a certain Broadway legend reading his work and Mr. Idol’s seemingly genuine plug for another author’s book at the end of the show. Incidentally, his after-show Q & A also had the same air of authenticity.
The next day, the bubble burst when I learned that he wrote the same pithy remark in my autographed copy of his book as he wrote in my friend’s book. Instead of thinking of this as a breach of our otherwise personal fan-author meeting, I choose to think of it as an Idol trading card—“Oh you got ‘Let’s wash jeans together’? I got ‘you bedazzle me.’” The autograph remains a sweet Idol candy conversation heart, the dessert from a satisfying evening.
